All of a sudden Christmas is upon us and there’s a possible panic in some houses across the land. I’m not remotely organised nor am I panicking, I’m meticulously listy in my head and it will all fall into place. "Don’t worry about the traffic jam until travel time" I say. I’ve ordered my veg from Fletchers so all that needs to be done is to pick it up on Christmas Eve, the turkey and all that jazz will miraculously appear and then I’m off to BBC Radio Berkshire to chat away with Bill Buckley.
We went to Düsseldorf at the weekend which was cold, jolly cold. On the way back one of our friends was getting annoyed with fellow passengers being taken by surprise when they needed to produce passports, boarding passes or taking off belts etc at security. I had never really given it much thought as just do it instinctively but I was beginning to lose the plot! I wonder if these surprised people get a shock when they’re asked to pay at the till?
I remember the days before cards and scrabbling around for the coins for the bridge (old and new Severn bridges) obviously that was never a surprise as we would try and offload as much loose change as we could but I am now wondering if queues are due to people being taken unawares.
What with it being the last week of term everything has slowed down a notch and there’s not been so much dashing. I have been enjoying school run a bit more recently as I’ve dropped and dashed to Gail’s which recently opened in Peach Street. Oh my days. What a beautiful and welcome addition to Wokingham. I gave up sugar in August but I’ve recently re-introduced sourdough so I’m happy. It’s a jolly and bright place to meet up with friends, everything is freshly baked and Rose, the manager, and her team are dedicated and friendly.
The end of the year is a great time for reflection and I will look back on 2018 with a huge smile, a considerably smaller waist and a massive sense of achievement. Giving up sugar is no mean feat and I have surprised myself at the willpower and dedication. I didn’t do it to lose weight, I did it because I was unwell. I no longer have eczema, psoriasis, anxiety, insomnia or aches. As I approach my 50th I will be fitter, happier and ready for the next half century
Wishing you all the blessings of the season, thank you for reading my column and The Wokingham Paper throughout the year. I’ll be back on this page on Thursday 3rd January 2019.
